In the latest job trends survey, the IT services industry showed a growth of 1,000 jobs from January to March this year, the Association of South Asian Engineers and Technicians (ASAE) said.
The total number of IT professionals in the country is more than 1.5 crore and the number of job postings in the sector is more over 1 crore, according to the association, which represents more than 150,000 workers.
According to the survey, jobs are available for IT workers in more than 30 states and the union said the jobs would continue to grow.
The unemployment rate for IT professionals stood at 5.1 per cent in the first quarter of the current fiscal, up from 5.3 per cent during the same period last year.
The number of vacancies was down by more than 2,500 during the year, said ASAE secretary-general K.G. Gopakumar.
“The demand for skilled IT professionals is growing but the demand is not being met by the existing workforce,” he said.
As per the ASAE, the jobs in the information technology sector have increased by 5,000 in the year to March 2017 from the same quarter last year and are expected to grow by over 1,800 jobs in 2017-18, the union added.
The growth in the employment rate in the industry is the largest among all the sectors.
However, IT jobs are not yet being filled by those who have completed their post-graduate studies, it added.
It said the demand for IT engineers is rising and the vacancies are growing.
